When starting any business, it’s important to gain any required training and/or education. When starting a tattoo business in particular, there may be certain training, certification and other requirements that must be met prior to opening a studio. Because of the nature of business, you will need to know how to properly sterilize the equipment and educate customers on how to care for their new tattoo in order to prevent infection. The best way to learn about local license and/or industry requirements is to call the local business office and explain the type of business that you would like to open.
Once your training and any necessary licensing are both successfully completed, it will be time to apply for a business license. This piece of paper is very important and must be displayed in your tattoo studio each and every day. The best way to do this is to place your business certificate in a frame and display it on the wall.
Now that you have a business license and any other special licenses required by your local business department, it’s time to choose a location for your studio. Ideally, any place of business would be located in a high-traffic commercial area. The more people that pass by your business, the better likelihood that they will stop in. In addition, when you advertise your business or try and explain to someone where it is located, you don’t want to have a lot of difficult directions. Instead, a simple ‘in town’ or ‘on main street’ would be ideal.
When it comes to advertising your new tattoo business, start small and work your way up. Because your business is new, you are probably working with a limited budget. Don’t worry, most new businesses are. That’s why there are alternate forms of advertising that can help you to get the word out about your new venture without spending a fortune. First and foremost, purchase a large sign to display outside of your business. Make sure that your business name, grand opening date and any special price offerings are noted for every passerby to see. In addition, decorate any windows in your store with samples of your work recreated as clear window adhesives.

business idea small starting
love the saying: "Don't be afraid to go out on a limb because that's where the fruit is." I have always been a risk taker. Some risks have worked out better than others. I've lost my share of funds and have had my share of disasters but each and every one held a valuable lesson for me so I just chalked it up to paying for that education! The Idea
In 1983 my twin sister and I decided to open our own business. Neither one of us had any extra money at the time but that didn't stop us. We had both been nail techs in a local beauty salon for a few years and realized that the city did not have have a single "Nail Shop", so we seized the opportunity to open one.
Having no real business experience didn't stop us either because we all know ignorance is bliss, right? To have a twin with as much business ignorance as you makes for a double scoop of bliss.
The Location
We found a great location in a small shopping center that had a space open. The rent was $300 a month and we thought we could swing it and make a profit if we brought in some more nail tech operators to rent space from us. The shopping center contained a cleaners, a dress shop, a uniform shop, and a beauty salon. We were a perfect fit since this was a high traffic area for women! How could we be anything but successful??
Getting the Money Together
We looked the place over and realized it would need some work on the inside. We also needed "stations" for the operators and we couldn't afford the manufactured kind so we decided to have some built from a carpenter we knew would give us a discount. All in all we tallied what our opening expenses would be and we figured we needed about $1500 each to open the business. I had to go to the bank to borrow my $1500.00 but Debbie, my twin sister, already had that amount saved.
We didn't have any financial forecasts. We didn't have a business plan. What we had was notebook and some posty notes for ideas and how much money we would need. But we could FILL a notebook with our enthusiasm and our desire to be successful.
Choosing Our Business Name
Our next step was to decide on a fantastic name. We both agreed on "The Ultimate Nail and Body Care Shoppe". We now had a massage therapist, another nail tech, and a facialist, ready to lease space and become part of the business family.
Remodeling the Space Our Self
We did most of the cosmetic inside changes our self including getting new carpet for the shop from a carpet installation friend. He had just redone a big hotel and had the old carpet to get rid of. We bought it at a huge discount and he installed it for us if we gave his wife lifetime manicures. We agreed and within a week we had a brand new looking floor. We painted. Replaced trim and baseboards ourselves, made our own shop decorations, and were very pleased with our new handmade stations.
"Renaming" the Business
During the whole remodeling process, all of our friends, family, and shopping center neighbors kept calling the shop, "The Twins Nail Shop". After two weeks of hearing this from everyone, we decided not to fight it and renamed the business to "The Twins Nail Shoppe".
Even on the first day, customers would look at me, look at Debbie and then say, "Are you twins?" We would reply with "Yes. We are the owners and that's why it's called The Twins Nail Shoppe". They would always laugh and say, "OH!" I'm not sure if this had anything to do with our success but our whole life it has seemed that people get excited when they actually know a set of twins. Twins fascinate people. They can't wait to ask all the same questions and for those of you who are now wondering....

business name idea
Ask 500 people already in business how they decided upon their business name and you will get 500 different answers. Everyone has a story behind how they chose their own business name. Even if the business is named after their own birth name, there's a reason why this was done.
When you open a business, in a sense, you are causing a new birth to begin. This new birth was created from an idea alone by you or your associates. It will have its own bank account, its own federal identification number, its own credit
accounts, its own income and its own bills. On paper, it is another individual! Just as if you were choosing a name for your own unborn child, you need to spend considerable time in deciding upon your business name.
There are several reasons why a good business name is vitally important to your business. The first obvious reason is because it is the initial identification to your customers. No one would want to do business with someone if they didn't have a company name yet. This makes you look like an amateur who is very unreliable. Even if you call your company "Kevin's Lawn Service," a company name has been established and you are indeed a company. People will therefore feel more comfortable dealing with you.Secondly, a business name normally is an indication as to the product or service you offer. "Mary's Typing Service," "Karate Club for Men," "Jim-Dandy Jack-of-all-Trades," "Laurie and Steve's Laundry," "Misty's Gift Boutique," and "Star 1 Publishers" are all examples of simple business names that immediately tell the customer what product you offer. However, most people will choose the simple approach when naming their business. They use their name, their spouse's name, their children's names or a combination of these names when naming a business. The national hamburger-restaurant chain "Wendy's" was named after the owner's daughter. However, research has proven that these "cutesy" names are not the best names to use for a business. Many experts claim that it makes the business look too "mom-and-pop-sie." However, this depends on the business. If you are selling something that demands this mood or theme to appeal to your market, it's best to use this approach.Names like, "Sensible Solutions," "Direct Defenders," "Moonlighters Ink," "Printer's Friend," "Strictly Class," "Collections and Treasures," and "Starlight on Twilight" are all good examples of catchy names. These types of names relate to your product or service but serve as a type of slogan for your business. This is a big help when marketing. When you name a child, you may not decide upon a definite name until after they are born. You do this because a name is sometimes associated with a type of personality. When you name a business you may need to wait until you have a product or service to sell and then decide upon a business name before going into the business itself because your business name should give some clue as to what product or service you are selling. A business named "Joe's Collections" normally wouldn't sell car parts and a business named "Charlie Horse" would not sell knitting supplies. To generate ideas - begin looking at business signs everywhere you go. Notice which ones catch your eye and stick in your mind. Try and figure out "why" they stuck in your mind. Naturally, the business "Dominos Pizza" sticks in your mind because it is nationally known. These don't count! Look around and notice the smaller businesses. Take your time. Within a few days you should be able to come up with a few potential business names. Then, when you finally find a few names you really like -try reciting them to other people and get their opinion. It won't be long until your business will have the proper name that will carry it through it's life!
